Look twice!
Three pieces on this page have one in common: they are multi-functional.
- The powder by Guerlain is designed for every skin tone and reduces redness, refreshes, brings an auratic brilliance to the skin...
- The designer chair by Numen has extra pockets and an elaborated mechanism for the sunshade.
- The Kennwood kitchen-machine can be used for more than extracting juices from fruits and vegetables. (What ever this would be!)
Even the two other pieces, Jeroen Van Tuyl's knitwear jacket and Emporio Armani's sunglasses fulfil more than one function alongside giving us an edgy look; but nobody mentions primarily that the jacket has a warming effect and a comfortable button closing or that the eyes are protected by the glasses from sun rays or speaks about the lightness of the frame.
That's the difference between fashion and product design.

Dark blue knit jacket with maritime, nostalgic touch by Dutch designer Jeoren Van Tuyl, FW2010/11. In the label's 10th year, the Rotterdam (NL) based and at the Arnhem Institute for the Arts graduated (1998) Jeroen Van Tuyl presents his first knitwear collection for women. Jeroen Van Tuyl has focused his work during the last years on the reinvention of man's body and the cultural themes religion and poetic. For the 'Manitou'-collection spring/summer 2010, he is influenced by the Native Americans' respect for nature. (Fashionoffice article "Fashion inspired by 'Manitou'", Sept 2009.)
Powder 'Météorites Voyage - Mythic' with brush by Guerlain, summer 2010. In 1987, Guerlain has pressed the powder for the first time to perls, applied the scent of violets, and entitled them 'Les Météorites'. The powder is constructed to break the light into many different colors. With this 'brilliance' irregularities of the skin can be covered. Therefore, Guerlain has mixed different colors into one powder: pink has a refreshing effect, green diminishes redness, white brightens, mauve captures the light, and gold- and mother of pearl tones apply an auratic shine to the skin. The meteorite-powder comes usually in three tones for different skin types. But the powder on this page is an exception: it is designed to beautify every skin tone. It combines six different color tones!
EA 9633s in pink 80s style by Emporio Armani, SS2010.
Deck chair with removeable sunshade by the Vienna based label 'Numen', founded by the group of product designers 'For Use', SS2010. In April 2010, the interior label has presented the deck chair with sunshade at the Salone del Mobile. Sven Jonke and Nikola Radeljkovic have studied at the School of Design/Faculty of Architecture in Zagreb, Christoph Katzler at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. According to an article on their website, the three designers started in 1999 with the aim to develop design that is liberated from traditional restrictions. By surfing through the online Numen-product gallery, the group seems to follow the idea of interactivity and multi-functionality. The wooden/cotton retro-chair has two pockets that are stitched onto the fabric at the user’s head and under the seat. "Apart from its function as a storage for usual outdoor accessories (towel, newspaper, swimming suit,...) the headrest pocket serves as a pillow when filled up." explains Numen.
FP972 Food Processor multipro Excel by Kenwood, seen in SS2010. The kitchen-machine extracts juices from carrots, oranges, which can be mixed with green tea to strengthen and bronze the skin - even without the sun, or juices from vegetables such as tomatoes with a shot olive oil and pepper (against free radicals). The juices are a perfect add-on to sun-protection and antiaging cosmetics!
